                                                     Chapter One

A.E.D was sitting at his desk at home, working at his computer. He sighed and rubbed his tired eyes before continuing to type away. The mug of coffee on the side table had already gotten cold. ‘Why did they have to give me extra work on the one day I get to stay home?!’ he fumed. He glanced at the clock at the corner of the screen and saw it was almost two. He debated whether he could afford to stop right now and just go to bed.

He had been asking himself that off and on all night but each time he would look at the workload ahead and decide it would be inconvenient to stop right in the middle of something and have to pick up where he left off tomorrow. But at the moment he wasn’t right in the middle… ‘That’s it. I’m going to bed.’ A.E.D saved his work and shut off his computer. He backed up in his office chair and stood, stretching because his lower back hurt from sitting in a bad posture.

He went over to a lamp on a side table and was about to switch it off when he happened to glance at the couch. A little ball of something with brown skin and darker hair was nestled on the cushions dressed in a purple nightgown with her pink teddy bear under her arm and a small, blue blanket pulled over her legs. Kimmie had been sitting on the couch waiting for him to be done working so he could read her a story; he hadn’t thought it would take him very long to finish. Around twelve thirty she curled up on the couch, pulling a blanket over herself and by one o’ clock she was fast asleep.

The sight was pretty cute but it also made him feel guilty for making her stay up so late. He watched her small back rise and fall with steady breathing then sighed and came over to where she lay on the couch. He lifted her into his arms and started carrying her down the hall to her room. “Sorry.” he whispered to her sleeping form. He soon reached Kimmie’s bedroom and shifted her to one arm while he pulled down the covers then he set her down and pulled the blanket over her. He kissed her on the forehead and whispered a “good-night” then left the room and quietly shut the door.

On the way back to his own room he thought about how things had been the past few weeks. The underworld had been causing a serious riot three weeks ago but suddenly everything had gone quiet. His department had been monitoring underworld activity for years but even the veteran agents couldn’t figure out where they had all gone. It was like all the drug lords and black marketers had just disappeared off the face of the earth! (Not that there would be any complaints coming from him if that were the case.)

Still…it was very unsettling that it had been over a week now and they still couldn’t detect any movement among the miscreants of society. “Maybe they’re all just on vacation.” A rookie agent had joked. ‘I wish.’ A.E.D thought wearily. A break from Izm and his ilk sounded too good, even for a vacation. But his experience told him there was something wrong with the wrongdoers. He had never known them to just take off when their business was booming.

He shook his head. Maybe he was thinking too hard on this. In a couple more weeks they would probably all be back again with their storehouses loaded with more illegal merchandise and he would be back to work, trying to track down the worst of them.

                                                         ~*~*~*~

A.E.D was in the cafeteria at work absentmindedly listening to the conversation going on at the table across from him. “They say it’s confidential,” said one of the men. “I don’t know if that means they know something we don’t or they don’t know anything at all.” “How can you be sure that it isn’t confidential?” asked another man. “Well, the way I see it, if it was really something secret they wouldn’t have let us know about it; they would wanna pretend like it didn’t even exist.”

“Hey, .D!” called a familiar voice. A.E.D looked up and saw a familiar figure with gray eyes. “Hey, Larson.” A.E.D greeted. Larson sat down across from him and clasped his hands together, looking over at him expectantly. “So, anything new?” he asked. “Not so much as a sneeze.” A.E.D sighed, rubbing his temple. “All our tracking equipment and undercover agents can’t dig up a single clue as to the whereabouts of the underworld.” “Maybe they found out business was better someplace else and just took off.” “That’s possible but not likely.” A.E.D said, drumming his fingers on the table.

“I just can’t come up with any good explanations for why they would disappear when their business was doing so well.” Larson shrugged and dug a spoon into his fruit cup. “I don’t know, .D. Sounds like you got quite a problem on your hands.” “Tell me about it.” he groaned. The past few days had been very stressful for all the agents in A.E.D’s department. There were secretaries running around with files filled with reports and possible new leads, phones were ringing constantly and agents kept getting called into the president’s office and were then sent out on various assignments.

Now it was A.E.D’s turn to be called in. He waited beside the secretary desk while Joe the secretary typed away at his computer. The door to the president’s office opened and three agents (two men and one woman) exited the room, whispering to each other, wearing identical expressions of concern. A.E.D watched them leave then stepped into the president’s office. The president was sitting at his desk as usual, looking down at a file in his hand, his brow furrowed in frustration. A whole stack of other files were sitting on his desk.

A.E.D cleared his throat and the president looked up. “Ah, A.E.D, take a seat.” He gestured to the four chairs in front of his desk. A.E.D sat down in one and waited for the president to get his thoughts together. After a few seconds the president scowled and dropped the file onto his desk with a heavy sigh. “Useless.” he muttered. “Nothing in there that can help us.” He looked over at A.E.D, a hand on his chin. “A.E.D from what I’ve heard, not even you have any speculations as to where and why the underworld vanished.” A.E.D shook his head. “I’ve heard lots of theories but none of them work as an explanation. This is very unusual behavior even for them.”

The president nodded and picked up another file on his desk. “It is VERY unusual which is why I’m hesitant about sending anyone out there to investigate.” A.E.D frowned curiously. “What do you mean, sir?” The president sighed and pulled a sheet of paper out of the file. “A.E.D some of our lead experts on criminal behavior have been working on this case.” ‘More like crisis.’ A.E.D thought grimly. “And they have come up with a theory that is actually plausible.” A.E.D sat up attentively, interested in hearing a better explanation than the ones that had been drifting around the cafeteria.

The president kept his attention on the file as he flipped through the various papers inside. “There is a possibility that because of how well their business was doing, they decided to take it somewhere else; somewhere our spies wouldn’t think to look, but that’s not all. There is also the possibility that they went underground to get us to come to them.” A.E.D raised an eyebrow. “Sir, are you saying that…” “This whole thing could be a trap or something to keep our attention off of something else.”

The president stood up and started pacing around the office with his hands behind his back. “A.E.D, I called you in here, not to give you an assignment but to give you a warning.” He turned to face A.E.D. “You are one of our best agents. You’ve helped put several of the most untouchable drug lords behind bars and that makes you a target. There isn’t a street thug in this city that wouldn’t love to have your head. If our theory proves correct, I think it would be wise for you to lay low for a while.” A.E.D studied the president’s face. “You’ve given this warning to other agents, haven’t you?” The president nodded.

A.E.D was silent thinking about what it all meant. Lay low; that basically meant playing it safe and staying off the streets as much as possible. He thought about the last time he had ignored a warning the president had given him. He gulped at the memory and nodded. “All right…thank you, sir.” The president smiled and gave a quick nod then returned to his chair and picked up another file from the stack. “Very good. You’re dismissed.” A.E.D got up and left the office, unknowingly wearing the same expression as the other three agents that he had watched leave earlier.

                                                         ~*~*~*~

Back at home A.E.D was sitting on the couch watching a ball game on TV. He wasn’t really interested in the game itself but it made it look like he was doing something and gave his eyes something to focus on while he thought about different things. He could hear the sounds of high-pitched laughter coming from outside as Kimmie and her friend Sarah played in the back yard. The clock on the wall ticked listlessly as the seconds passed by.

A.E.D’s face was as blank and unreadable as ever but inside he was asking himself how long he could possibly stand to live like this with no activity besides watching mindless television and thinking. He was sure he would go mad by the end of a week if he had to endure this for more than a few days. He sighed heavily through his nostrils and glanced up at the clock. Quarter ’til six, he had officially been sitting there for a good half hour. He cast his gaze skyward in the typical “why me???” gesture.

Kimmie and Sarah dashed in through the front door gasping as their laughter calmed down. “Ha, see?” said Sarah. “I can catch you if I run as fast as I can!” “Yeah,” Kimmie laughed, “but you only caught me because I tripped.” “Nuh-uh!” “Yah-huh!” They were making their way through the living room now as they continued to argue about which of them was fastest. “You know, I wish we had race cars.” said Kimmie, cleverly changing the subject. “Oh, yeah, that would be fun! Running too long makes my feet hurt.” Sarah responded, slipping off her tennis shoes.

They were just about to enter the hallway when Kimmie spotted A.E.D sitting on the couch, staring blankly at the TV screen. She frowned and turned to her friend. “You go on and set up our dolls, Sarah, I need to do something.” Sarah bobbed her blond head then sprinted down the hall toward Kimmie’s room. Kimmie turned and came over to A.E.D. He was now debating how long he could stay like this if his life really depended on it. On the one hand, having nothing to do was, well, BORING. But on the other hand too much was at stake to risk going out into public at this point.

“Daddy?” A small voice snapped him out of his thoughts and he looked down, finding himself staring into a pair of familiar, caramel-colored eyes. Kimmie frowned up at him. “What’s the matter, Daddy?” A.E.D shook his head. “Nothing, I was just thinking about something…” “Oh…” Kimmie glanced over her shoulder at the TV. “I didn’t know you liked vacuum cleaners so much.” “What?” A.E.D looked up at the television and saw that the game was over and it had changed to an hour-long commercial about a new brand of vacuum cleaner.

“Hm…guess I didn’t notice.” He picked up the remote and switched the channel to another game. The two were silent for a moment then Kimmie took a seat beside him on the couch. “You like sports?” “Sort of.” he answered. “Not really.” he muttered under his breath. Kimmie looked at him curiously. “Huh?” “Nothing.” he said quickly then as Kimmie continued to stare he tried to give her a convincing smile. Kimmie obviously wasn’t buying it. “You’re acting kinda funny, are you sure you’re okay?” A.E.D sighed. “Yeah, I’m okay. It’s just something going on at work that’s got me uptight.”

“Is something bad going to happen?” Kimmie asked worriedly. A.E.D shook his head. “Not if I can help it.” The room fell silent again with the low sounds of the announcer on TV talking in the background. Finally Kimmie looked up at him from her place beside him and asked, “Can you?” The question caught him off-guard as he considered how to respond. Could he help it? Could he make sure nothing bad happened? No, of course not, there was only so much one man could do, but still… He sighed and looked over at Kimmie. “I’ll do my best.” he said earnestly. Kimmie tilted her head, fixing him with a scrutinizing gaze.

A.E.D almost cracked a smile. He had taught Kimmie that one way to tell if someone is lying is if they won’t look you in the eyes. He never looked away and Kimmie, satisfied, got up off the couch and smiled at him. “I gotta go, Sarah’s probably wondering where I am, but before I go…” She wrapped her small arms around his neck and gave him a hug. “You looked like you needed some cheering up.” she explained, pulling away. A.E.D smiled softly at her. “Thanks, Kimmie.” Kimmie smiled and nodded then hurried down the hall.

A.E.D watched her go then sighed and leaned back against the cushions. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. He could get used to this, right? A little rest and relaxation, no getting up at three in the morning to chase down some drug dealer, no late nights doing paperwork and no stress. It sounded good…too good.
Okay, I know what you're thinking; my little break wasn't so little. Sorry about that. ^^; Anyway this is the sequel to my other story Someone to Love. [link]

You know, the sad thing about things that seem too good to be true is that they usually are.
